What to Look for in Your 3PL
There are a variety of third-party logistics (3PL) companies on the market today, which can make choosing the right one difficult. While some are targeted at small businesses, others are meant for established brands, and others are best suited for enterprise-level companies.
No matter where your business falls on the scale, there are still things to think about. Your fulfillment service is a true business partner. Getting customers their orders quickly and efficiently is crucial to maintaining a positive brand image.
As you evaluate potential partners, consider:

- Amount of warehouse space
- Size of the fulfillment network
- Tools and integrations
- Inventory security

Features
The Whiplash technology platform has a range of features to support easy order fulfillment and inventory management.
Additional Features
Rules Engine
What makes Whiplash unique is its rules engine. You can use it to set rules for:
- Packing
- Order Routing
- Carrier Accounts
The platform makes it possible to create granular rules as detailed as you need for your business operations.
For instance, you can create a rule, like:
For packages that include more than four items but fewer than eight items and do not contain SKU 123ABC, use Polymailer 10×13.
For packages that include SKU 1234ABCD, use the cheapest available shipping carrier.
The packaging rules display as suggestions to the order pickers and allow you to stick to your operating processes to keep costs down and control order flow.
Whiplash will set up routing rules based on your business goals if you have items in multiple warehouses. By default, orders ship from the closest facility with all items in stock.
Shipping Method Mapping
Each account can create shipping method rules based on your business operations.
After choosing your shipping methods, you can set up mapping to ship all your packages using your preferred methods.
Under the default rules, your account uses the Whiplash Cheapest Rate setting, which ships the package using the cheapest carrier and the shipping speed available.
Live Order Editing
Whiplash lets customers set a “gestation period” for orders, during which time editing the order itself is possible.
For example, if the gestation period is set to two hours, during those two hours, if someone calls into customer service and asks for a change, such as a different color or size, it can easily be switched.
After the gestation period has expired, it’s possible to change the shipping address up until the shipping label has been purchased.
Dropshipping
Whiplash also supports dropshipping. If you dropship from another merchant, like Kohl’s for example, you can manage the orders in the Whiplash platform for clear reporting while Kohl’s ships the items from their facility.
Audit Trail
The Whiplash dashboard includes an audit trail on all main screens. This lets employees see who has taken action and when on each order.
Returns Management
Whiplash makes returns management simple. It integrates with three of the top returns management apps in the industry, including:
- Loop
- Returnly
- Happy Returns
Bundling and Kitting Services
Whiplash offers kitting services that make it easy to sell product bundles and subscription boxes.
Want to sell a group of items but also sell them individually? Create a product bundle to keep the inventory flexible. This makes it possible for the warehouse staff to sell items individually or as a set.
Each bundle functions as an item in inventory and gets assigned a SKU.
Kitting involves selling a larger set of products. It’s cheaper to pre-pack items into shipping boxes so that when they’re ordered, you only pay the per package fee, without additional picking fees.
Kitting services are charged at an hourly rate. You can use these services to add promotional items and provide a better brand experience.
